Why does an LEI have to be renewed?

The reference data behind the code is re-verified every 12 months so the global index stays reliable. If it is not renewed, the LEI is publicly marked as lapsed.

What happens if I let it lapse?

The code still exists but is flagged as lapsed, and counterparties may refuse to transact. We remind you ahead of the date so it does not happen.

Can you take over an LEI registered elsewhere?
